Experience of Spiritual Awakening - The Beginning

Enlightenment Teaching of Krishna in Bhagavad Gita - Part 5 of 8

teshaam satatayuktaanaam bhajataam priitipuurvakam |
dadaami buddhiyogam tam yena maam upayaanti te || (BG – 10:10)

Meaning: To those who are ever united with Me and worship Me with Love, I give Buddhi Yoga by which they come to Me.

Who is a devotee? Most of the devotional cults define the supreme Deity as God and Lord of the universe and a devotee as one who worships that Deity with such faith. The definition of devotion is thus limited to mere faith. As already discussed, due to the absence of omnipresence feature in this definition for the supreme Deity, the devotee will never go beyond this faith until death.

Krishna defines a devotee here by means of a spiritual phenomenon and not just faith. A devotee is one whose soul has been discriminated from his body so that the soul of the devotee becomes integral part of Krishna, the omnipresent Spiritual Entity that is God and Lord of this universe.

This spiritual phenomenon is a permanent one in the sense that soul of the devotee is united with Krishna 24x7. Whether he is doing some activity or thinking some thoughts or craving for some desires, it doesn’t matter at all - his soul will always be united with Krishna. It is a sentient spiritual phenomenon connected with soul and hence is independent of the activities of insentient tools like body and mind. Due to this spiritual phenomenon of discrimination of soul of the devotee from his body, the devotee develops permanent unconditional Love for Krishna, the omnipresent Spiritual Entity that is God and Lord of this universe.

Buddhi Yoga refers to the equanimity of intellect of the devotee as regards the duality of results of actions performed by the devotee. This is the result of Karma Yoga. When a person striving for Enlightenment practises Karma Yoga, she is to be indifferent to the results of actions (such as victory-defeat, gain-loss and pleasure-pain) she is performing daily - this is a tedious vigilant process involving her mind.

But when a devotee is bestowed with Buddhi Yoga (or just Yogam as Krishna prefers to call it), the renunciation of attachment to the results of all actions performed by him, automatically happens without any effort whatsoever on his part. The entire process becomes so easy, enjoyable and comfortable. It is like putting your automobile on the autopilot on the free highway and freeing your mind and body for other mundane activities. This is possible only after a spiritual phenomenon, called the Spiritual Awakening, happens to the devotee.

Spiritual Awakening refers to the separation of consciousness of soul of the devotee from his body-mind. This is the first stage of Spiritual Awakening that happens in two stages. It is a massive wonderful spiritual phenomenon that takes the devotee completely by surprise.

Krishna says here that after soul of the devotee is discriminated from his body, He will make us do Karma Yoga effortlessly and automatically. In other words, Spiritual Awakening will automatically happen to a devotee whose soul is discriminated from his body.

When will our soul be discriminated from our body? In other words, how can we become a devotee as defined by Krishna? If we worship Krishna as the omnipresent Entity that supports and pervades the Creation (Lord) and is the Source and Sink of the Creation (God), our soul will be discriminated from our body in due course. As simple as that. Association with enlightened persons will quicken this process due to the beneficent influence of the ego-annihilated expanded Consciousness of their soul emanating beyond the physical boundary of their body.

Not only Yogam - Krishna is going to declare another spiritual bounty for His devotee.

  1. Can all other gods and saints help us in discriminating our soul from our body?
