Experience of Spiritual Awakening - The Conclusion

Enlightenment Teaching of Krishna in Bhagavad Gita - Part 6 of 8

teshaam eva anukampaartham aham ajnaanajam tama: |
naaSayaami aatmabhaavastha: jnaanadeepena bhaasvataa || (BG – 10:11)

Meaning: Out of compassion for them, I, abiding in their soul, destroy the darkness born of ignorance by the shining Lamp of Wisdom.

Consider an iron piece that is moved by a stationary magnet by means of its magnetic field. Magnet never moved - it is only the iron piece that moved. Magnet didn’t cause the iron piece to move - it is only the magnetic field that caused the movement of iron piece. Magnet only possessed the magnetic field that caused the iron piece to move.

Our soul never does any action - only our body does. Our soul doesn’t supply life force to our body for it to act. Only the consciousness of our soul supplies life force to our body for it to act. Our soul simply possesses its consciousness that supplies sentience to our body that is otherwise insentient like stone, wood or metal.

Attachment to the doership of an act is what is called as ajnanam or ignorance. If I experience that I do an action along with my body, I am ignorant. That’s because I am soul and my soul is not the agent of action. We are not talking about mere faith but actual experience.

Krishna declares that He will destroy this ignorance of His devotee. So, the devotee will experience that he is not the agent of action for all actions he is doing. But this is possible only after the soul of the devotee, along with its consciousness, is separated from his body-mind. This spiritual phenomenon is known as the second stage of Spiritual Awakening.

Jnanam refers to the renunciation of doership of actions performed by the devotee. This is the result of Jnana Yoga. When a person striving for Enlightenment practises Jnana Yoga, she is to renounce the agency of actions she is performing daily - this is a tedious vigilant process involving her mind.

But when a devotee is bestowed with Jnanam, the renunciation of doership of all actions performed by him, automatically happens without any effort whatsoever on his part. The entire process becomes so easy, enjoyable and comfortable. It is like putting your automobile on the autopilot on the free highway and freeing your mind and body for other mundane activities.

During the progress of second stage of Spiritual Awakening, the devotee clearly understands that but for the sentience supplied by the consciousness of his soul, his body and mind are insentient like stone, wood or metal. This results in a powerful awareness that he is not the agent of actions of his body or mind. He knows, in experience, that it is his mind and not him that thinks his thoughts. He knows, in experience, that it is his body and not him that senses the sensory perceptions like hearing or smelling.

Thus a devotee gets the boon of Yogam to renounce the attachment to the duality of results of his actions due to the separation of consciousness of his soul from his body-mind after the completion of first stage of Spiritual Awakening. And the devotee gets the boon of Jnanam to renounce the attachment to the doership of his actions due to the separation of his soul from his body-mind after the completion of second stage of Spiritual Awakening.

A spiritually awakened devotee performs both Karma Yoga and Jnana Yoga together effortlessly and automatically. Therefore, it is only a matter of time before he knows, in experience, Who Krishna is.
