Krishna - Lord of the universe, the Pervader of the Creation


Enlightenment Teaching of Krishna in Bhagavad Gita - Part 3 of 8


aparaa iyam ita: tu anyaam prakrutim viddhi me paraam |
jiivabhuutaam mahaabaaho yayaa idam dhaaryate jagat || (BG – 07:05)

Meaning: Arjuna, know My higher Prakriti, the Sentient matter (Jiva bhuta), that is different from the above said lower Prakriti, and by which this world is sustained.

Our mind where our thoughts arise and our body where our sensory perceptions of sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch arise, are actually insentient. They behave like sentient entities due to the sentience supplied by the consciousness of our soul.


We know that our body after death is insentient like stone, wood or metal. During our lifetime, it is the consciousness of our soul that gives sentience to our body. Therefore, even during our lifetime, but for the presence of consciousness of our soul, our body is one hundred percent insentient matter.

It may be difficult for us to come to the same conclusion regarding our mind. Yet, our mind is also lifeless insentient energy like gravitational or magnetic energy – but for the presence of consciousness of our soul, it can think nothing.

So, our body and mind are simply the tools of our soul just as a mobile phone and a calculator are our tools. After Spiritual Awakening, we can actually OBSERVE our mind thinking its thoughts and our body in action, from the plane of consciousness that is totally different and separate from the material plane where our body and mind are existing and functioning. Then we’ll clearly understand that our body and mind are really sentient only due to the sentience supplied by the consciousness of our soul. Until then it is very difficult to understand this concept of insentience of our body and mind because our soul is buried deep into our body and mind.

Now Krishna claims that our soul is also insentient just as our body and mind are. Why? But for the sentience supplied by Him, our soul will also be insentient like atmospheric air. Therefore, He declares that the souls of ALL creatures of this universe are His subtle body just as mind is our subtle body. So, the body-mind-soul of ALL creatures of this world are simply the tools of Krishna just as mobile phones, calculators and computers are our tools.

In essence, Krishna continues to assert that He is not just confined to the form He has taken but an all-pervading spiritual Entity that gives sentience to ALL the creatures of the Creation.
